Most kids look forward to summer break, because it allows them to relax and focus on doing fun activities they rarely get to do while school is in session. However, when your child is struggling to keep up in their academics, summer break also provides a great opportunity to evaluate any issues and help them prepare for the new school year. As a parent, Dole Academy wants you to know there are several things you can do this summer to help your child get on track academically:

Get an FBA for your child.

One of the first things you should do to help your child is to arrange a functional behavior assessment (FBA). Teach.com describes an FBA as "a process that identifies a specific or target behavior that interferes with a student’s education". This assessment is a good first step in helping your child get on track academically because it can find certain issues that are
impeding their education and provide strategies for overcoming them. The FBA can be done to verify a learning disability, and it can also be done as part of the Individual Education Plan (IEP) or SAT process.

Designate 30 minutes a day for reading.

Summer is the perfect time for kids to read for enjoyment, and reading can help sharpen skills your child can put to use when school starts. Early in the summer break, take your child to the library to get any books that interest them, and see if there are any reading groups/clubs they
would consider. Designate 30 minutes each day for your child to read, and if they’re below a grade level in reading, you will want to read with them. That way, you can help them sound out words and explain the meanings of any words they don’t recognize.

Work on math.

Along with reading, it can be helpful to have your child engage in mathematics throughout the summer so that they’re not completely out of practice when the new school year begins. It’s pretty easy to find math workbooks online and at bookstores; just buy one for your child’s academic level, and have them tackle a few problems or a page each day. If your child particularly dislikes math, try to make it a fun daily challenge for them; you could even include some kind of incentive or reward. Working on math can help your child reinforce what they’ve already learned while preparing for their next class.

Hire a tutor.

If you’re like most parents, years away from school has left you a little rusty on certain academic subjects—not to mention you may be restricted on time or certain subjects may have dogged you as well. This is when working with a tutor or teacher can be beneficial for your child. Here are a few advantages of hiring a qualified tutor:

● They have knowledge and skills in various subjects, from algebra to calculus to reading comprehension.
● They can provide one-on-one attention for your child.
● They can help your child maximize their study time.
● They can help your child become more organized and disciplined in their work.
● They can teach your child additional material to give them an advantage in class.

Hiring a tutor could be one of the best things you do for your child’s education, because it can improve several aspects of their learning experience and, ultimately, lead to your child having better self-confidence.

While summer break is for fun and relaxation, it’s also for improving academics and staying sharp for the new school year. Help your child get on track with their learning by arranging an FBA, making time for reading and math each day, and hiring a tutor. Simple steps like these can make a lasting impact on your child’s education and future.
